Tel Hebron marks the location of the ancient city of Hebron. According to an ancient tradition, the top of the tel is where Yishai (Jesse), father of King David, and Ruth, mother of royalty, are entombed. Rabbinic tradition describes Yishai as one of four righteous men who died free of sin and one of the ten who entered the Garden of Eden during their lifetimes. Ever since the Middle Ages, Jewish travelers have described this location as a site of visitation and worship. Legends speak of a tunnel that links the Tomb of Yishai with the Tomb of the Patriarchs. The Tomb of Yishai has also been authenticated by Rabbi Isaac Luria - the Holy Ari z"I. The land of the tel was purchased by the Jewish community in the early 19th century. During the British Mandate era (1923-1948), the site was included on the list of holy places in the Land of Israel. An ancient structure to the west of the tel, facing Jerusalem, has been identified as a synagogue. On Shavuot (Pentacost), many Jews follow the custom of ascending to the tomb and reciting the Scroll of Ruth. תל חברון הוא מקומה של העיר הקדומה. מסורת עתיקה מציינת כאן, בפסגת התל, את קבר ישי אבי דוד המלך, ורות, אמה של מלכות. על פי מסורת חז"ל, ישי נמנה על ארבעת הצדיקים שמתו בלא חטא, והוא אחד מעשרת הצדיקים שנכנסו בחייהם לגן עדן. המקום מתואר ע"י נוסעים יהודיים החל מתקופת הראשונים (ימי הביניים) כאתר ביקורים ותפילה. אגדות סיפרו על מחילה המחברת בין קבר ישי למערת המכפלה. קבר ישי אומת גם ע"י האר"י הקדוש. אדמות התל נקנו ע"י הקהילה היהודית בתחילת המאה הי"ט, בתקופת המנדט הבריטי האתר נכלל ברשימת "המקומות הקדושים בארץ ישראלי". ממערב ישנו מבנה עתיק נוסף, הפונה לכיוון ירושלים, ומזוהה כבית כנסת קדום. בתקופת חג השבועות נוהגים רבים לעלות למקום ולקרוא את "מגילת רות".
